The Hive Youth Zone

In September 2019, Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation donated a small grant of £2,500 to the Hive Youth Zone.  Peter Scrivener and Ray Eugeni nominated this charity.

The Hive, located in Birkenhead, is a purpose-built facility for young people aged 8 – 19 and 25 for those with disabilities. The Youth Zone provides its members with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. Some of the fantastic facilities at the Youth Zone include a climbing wall, boxing gym, music suite, salon, art room, rooftop football pitch and sensory room. Qualified youth workers support young people across various issues, from mental health and healthy relationship workshops to help find work and gain experience.

The Hive creates unique opportunities for young people, such as sailing on Tall Ships, performing at The Royal Albert Hall, and working experience with our partner organisations to gain a climbing qualification.

Through the funding from Wasps Legends, The Hive were able to run a 12-week employability skills programme for young people aged 16-19 (or 25 with additional needs) who were not in employment or education. The programme offered each enrolled student a chance to get into work, apprenticeships, training, or further education.

This group consisted of 11 young people; 9 successfully completed the course. Of the 9, all left with a concrete plan for their next steps, with 7 of them moving into education, training, or employment, which they were still engaged with three months after completion of the course. As well as this, all participants reported an increase in confidence as well as a greater awareness of key employability skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication.

You can read more about this incredible 12-week course here, including an inspiring story about course attendee, Elizabeth.

Wasps legend is proud to have supported The Hive Youth Zone. They are pushing the boundaries of youth work and putting an incredible amount of work back into the community around them. We wish them the best of luck for the future.
