June 2019 – The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

In June 2019, Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation gifted the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust (EMCT) a grant of £2,500. Mark Roger nominated this charity.

As quoted by EMCT:

“The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust inspires young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer.”

Each year, nearly 1,900 children (0-14) and 2,500 young people (15-24) are diagnosed with cancer. This averages to around 12 a day (figure by CRUK, 2021). However, survival rates are increasing, but due to the treatment being during a period where young people are developing physically, emotionally, and socially, they remain vulnerable after treatment. It is tough for them to pick up where they left off.

This is where EMCT come in. They help young people through sailing and outdoor adventures. These experiences help improve their mental wellbeing; they gain a new sense of purpose and self-worth, rediscover their independence, and feel optimism for the future. They begin to realise what they are capable of again – physically, mentally, and socially – and stop feeling like ‘the only one’.

The grant of £2,500 went towards their 2019 trip season. Wasp Legends were able to help fund 649 young people that year, including 251 first-timers, 384 returners and 14 siblings.

Below is some feedback that was given to the EMCT by their beneficiaries:

“We’ve not had much control over our lives because of the experiences we’ve had. It’s really nice to be able to reclaim that.” Under 18 on a First Time Trip.

“I liked how we weren’t over patronised and weren’t formally made to talk about cancer. We can approach people in our own way and talk about it naturally.” Over 18 on a First Time Trip.

“I feel as though I am more able to talk about my experiences without feeling uncomfortable or judged. I feel I am also more confident within myself. I am proud of how far I’ve come and what I’ve achieved because a few years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to come on a trip like this.” Under 18 on a Return Trip.

At Wasps Legends, we are proud that we were able to help fund this trip; we can see the impact it has made on young people’s lives and how the support of the EMCT benefits the children and everyone around them. We wish them the best of luck for their future trips and the rest of their incredible work.
