Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation, the past players network of Wasps, men and women, amateur and professional announced today that they have issued a small grant award of £2,500 to the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) was established in 1991 and is the primary provider of air ambulance operations for the counties of West Midlands, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and provide secondary response or back up services to Warwickshire and Powys. Servicing a catchment area of 5,500 square miles and a population of six million people, the MAAC operate a fleet of two state-of-the-art Eurocopter EC135 helicopters, and a newly-purchased and larger H145 helicopter, all equipped with specialist medical equipment and a HEM’s (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) specially trained pilots and medical staff.

The grant will be used to support the running and mission costs as well as ongoing requirements to meet the operational needs of the aircrew for critical equipment to support each airbase, paramedic and aircraft. Midlands Air Ambulance crews respond to around 2,000 emergency missions, (over 50,000 to date) and save countless lives each year. Around half of those missions are as a result of a road traffic accident, sporting related or other accidents; with medical emergencies and falls accounting for a third.

Genevieve Glover, Chair of Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation said of the announcement: "We are very pleased to be supporting the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Their services can be the difference between life and death. Rapid response is essential to MAAC and it is generally accepted that the first hour after an incident is a crucial time for any patient.”

Michelle McCracken of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity added: "As charity entirely reliant on donations from the communities we serve, all donations are gratefully received. The support from Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation will help fund vitally important equipment to enable the aircrew to continue to save lives across our region.”
