WLCF small grant awarded to Helplink Community Support
  • Wasps Legends donate £2,500 to Helplink Community Support.
  • Donation will support the Kylemore Club in providing an opportunity for partially sighted older people to get together socially.

Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation, the past players network of Wasps, men and women, amateur and professional announced today that they have issued a small grant award of £2,500 to Helplink Community Support.

Helplink provide services for the elderly, sick and impaired across the Wirral. A network of volunteers offer transport, shopping and friendship and support nearly 900 clients each year who rely on the charity for vital help which would otherwise not be available.

The small grant will support the services provided in running the Helplink Club, a social club run by Helplink every Monday in Heswall on the Wirral, which is specifically targeted towards the partially sighted. The service provides a unique opportunity for many of the community’s most vulnerable and isolated older people to get together socially. All those who attend are transported by Helplink volunteers, for many this is their only weekly outing. Guests feel safe and secure – a friendly volunteer takes time going to their house to pick them up, ensuring they have everything they need with them, chatting on the way, and escorting them right inside; taking their coat and settling them in.

Genevieve Glover, Chair of Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation said of the announcement: "We are very pleased to be supporting Helplink with this donation. Supporting this project will provide a lifeline to those that may feel daunted by leaving the house due to their visual impairment. It’s important that we encourage the elderly to continue to live an independent life and not become housebound and isolated. These types of services are crucial to provide such a lifeline.”

Catherine Sandow of Helplink added: "We are so grateful to the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation for their support. This grant will help enable the Club to continue for another year. All around the Wirral clubs, such as ours, are closing due to lack of funding - contributing to the growing problem of social isolation For many our Club is a life line. So on behalf of all our clients, thank you."
