Wasps Legends and Help for Heroes extend Partnership

Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation, the past players network of Wasps men and women, amateur and professional, held their inaugural ‘World Rugby Golf Classic’ in La Manga in June 2016 and are heading back out to La Manga in June 2017, bringing together rugby and other sporting legends in a two day golf tournament to raise money for the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation and Help for Heroes.

In 2016, the event raised £88,000, with the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation donating £44,000 to Help for Heroes. Since the last ‘World Rugby Golf Classic’ the charity has been busy installing a putting green at the Help for Heroes Recovery Centre, Phoenix House, in North Yorkshire. The putting green will be used by Servicemen and women with life-changing injuries and illnesses as part of their recreational activity programme.

All money raised over the 2017 World Rugby Golf Classic, will again be shared between the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation and Help for Heroes. Help for Heroes has already said that the funding will be used to help purchase rugby wheelchairs to support its Sports Recovery Programmes.

Alistair Lockhart, Director of Fundraising at Help for Heroes, thanked the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation, saying: "Wasps Legends have showed an ongoing commitment to help our Veterans who have been wounded, injured or become sick. The value of physical activity in the long-term maintenance of health, wellbeing and independence should not be underestimated, and it is at the very heart of what Help for Heroes does. The funds raised are already helping our beneficiaries achieve their goals and aspirations, supporting them so they can live independent and fulfilling lives.”

Genevieve Glover, Chair of Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation, comments: "this is a fantastic weekend, where our guests get to show off their golfing prowess (or not!) and more importantly raise money for some fantastic causes. We are very proud to continue our partnership with Help for Heroes and welcome some of their ex-servicemen to compete in the golf and share their inspirational journeys. We are hoping to raise even more money this year to support the purchase of rugby wheelchairs”.

The whole of the Wasps legends squad epitomised everything rugby stands for - community spirit, great banter, competition on the pitch and the making of some lasting friendships.
