Wasps Legends inaugural 'World Rugby Golf Classic'

Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation, the past players network of Wasps men and women, amateur and professional, held their inaugural ‘World Rugby Golf Classic’ in La Manga in June 2016.

The Golf Classic brought together Rugby and other sporting legends of the game to play with 38 teams in a two day tournament to raise money for the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation and Help for Heroes.

Willie John McBride, Gavin Hastings, Brian Redpath, Tom Shanklin, David Trick and footballing legend Kenny Dalglish made up some of the international stars and Wasps Legends Peter Scrivener, Kenny Logan, Andy Gomarsall, Roger Uttley, Will Green, Simon Shaw, Alex King, Mark Denney, Jonny Ufton and Hugo Southwell were all on the course. Teams were entertained by their sporting stars, which boast caps from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, France, Kuwait, the British and Irish Lions and the Barbarians.

Teams were also treated to two charity dinners, which all contributed to the charity fundraising over the weekend, which raised over £80,000 for the two charities.

James Harding, Chair of Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation, and one of the golfers said: "this was a fantastic weekend, where we got to show off our golfing prowess (or not!) but more importantly raise money for some fantastic causes. We are very proud to have linked with Help for Heroes on this occasion and were delighted to have some of their ex-servicemen compete in the golf and share their inspiration journeys at our gala dinner”.

The money raised will be split between the two charities, Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation and Help for Heroes, to fund specific charitable projects.

Peter Scrivener, Trustee for the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation summed up the weekend: "Everyone had a great weekend and we raised a large amount for charity which was our aim. We are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back to La Manga next year. Congratulations go to Paladin for winning the team competition and Rob ‘The Dog’ Lozowski for winning the Individual Player competition.

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes’ mission is to ensure that an enduring national network of support is in place that

enables our wounded, injured and sick to achieve their full potential and helps them and their

families, when needed, for life. We do that in partnership with the military, other charities, our

corporate friends and our superb supporters. At Help for Heroes we inspire, enable and support

the wounded and their families to rebuild their lives. As Theodore Roosevelt said, "Any man who is

good enough to shed his blood for his country is good enough to be given a fair deal afterwards”.
